Baldassare Manara, Dish with St. Clare

Italian, circa 1535
Majolica
The J. Paul Getty Museum

St. Clare hands a lamp to St. Peter and says the words written on the banderole. The first word is petre, "O Peter," but the rest is hard to interpret. Peter is identified by the keys and his short, square beard. Clare's attributes are the book, lamp, and lilies. She is wearing the habit of the Order of Poor Ladies, which she founded. The female figure on the right holds a palm branch signifying her status as a martyr.
