A Follower of the Egerton Master
The Virgin and Child, and a Woman in Prayer

France, Circa 1410
Manuscript miniature
MS. Ludwig IX 5 (83.ML.101)
The J. Paul Getty Museum

The Virgin Mary is pictured standing and full-length. This is an uncommon tactic in two-dimensional works, but it helps establish the humility of the petitioner kneeling at her feet.

The child holds a mappa munci orb emblematic of his reign over the earth. More often an object in his hand will refer to his Passion.

The Latin text below begins a prayer to the Virgin: O intemerata et in eternum benedicta singularis atque incomparabilis virgo dei ge[netrix]…, "O spotless and eternally blessed, unique and incomparable virgin mother of God…."
