In this iconographic type Mary holds the child while sitting on the ground. Often she is pictured as here, suckling the child. The crown in this example is unusual but not unprecedented. The red robe and blue mantle are typical for all kinds of portraits of the Virgin.

The adult Christ is pictured above in a sunburst, holding a scepter and blessing the viewer.
