The Master of Klosterneuberg
Madonna and Child

Circa 1335
Pot-metal and colorless glass, oxide paint, and silver stain
The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles

In the Orthodox "Glykophilousa" icon: the child touches the mother's face, which betrays some sadness. This image on glass follows that pattern, with the addition of the blessing gesture and a different color scheme. In both types, as usual in two-dimensional Madonna and Child images, the mother is shown half-height and holds the child.
