St. Dorothy

Late 19th/early 20th century
Lyndhurst Mansion, Tarrytown, New York

This is a copy, with some slight variations, of Franz Ittenbach's Heilige Dorothea from the mid-19th century. (Ittenbach lived 1813-79.) According to the tour guide at Lyndhurst Mansion, it was acquired for the mansion by Helen Miller Gould Shepard (1868-1938). In both paintings St. Dorothy is identified by her attributes, the palm branch and the basket of roses. The blond hair and scoop neckline are typical of her other portraits.
