Oil on canvas
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City
From the Convento de Nuestra Señora del Carmen del Santo Desierto, Tenancingo, Mexico
"Mater Dolorosa" or "Our Lady of Sorrows" images are characterized by one or more swords in Mary's breast. This painting departs from the usual iconography by including the source of her sorrow, the instruments used in the passion and crucifixion of her son.
