The Presentation

The one-palm-out gestures follow the style of the book. The child's gesture of extending both arms perhaps signifies greeting, as this episode is known in the East as the Hypapante or "Meeting of the Lord." Otherwise the details are as in late-medieval western versions: the suggestion of the Temple in the background, the altar, the persons portrayed, the doves in a basket, Simeon's covered hands.
