St. Margaret of Antioch
French, circa 1475
Alabaster, traces of gilding; 15⅜ x 9⅝ x 6 9/16 in. (39 x 24.5 x 16.7 cm.)
Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Margaret figure's arms have broken off, so one cannot know whether she was holding the cross that is her usual attribute, but the monster from which the cross enabled her escape is very much in evidence.
