Guariento di Arpo
Coronation of the Virgin Altarpiece: Detail, St. Nicholas

Padua, 1344
Tempera and gold leaf on panel
Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, California

This portrait is notable for what it does not have. Most images of St. Nicholas in this period identify him either by three gold balls or by several boys in a tub, but Arpo simply puts his name, S nicolaus, to the left of the portrait.
