Christ at the Pillar

Wood, gesso, paint; eyelashes, painted eyes, wig; fabric loincloth.
Three feet tall
Church of San Miguel Achiutla, Oaxaca, Mexico

Traditional images of the scourging of Jesus (John 19:1) have him tied to a column. As with most Mexican santos of the Passion, this one exhibits the bloody lesions he suffered from his tortures.

The statue is in good physical condition, with all fingers intact. It is bald beneath the wig. Under the fabric loincloth is a carved one.
