The Sarcophagus of Marcus Claudianus: Detail – the decedent, Marcus Claudianus

Unlike the rest of the sarcophagus front, the upper right is mainly classical in inspiration rather than Christian, with the possible exception of the choice of motifs of harvest and vintage in the areas left and right of this detail respectively.  (It is wheat that is being harvested, so one might see a reference to bread and wine, to the Eucharistic banquet, and thus to the hoped-for heavenly destination of the decedent.)
