The Apse in St. Paul Outside the Walls: Detail, St. Peter

The inscription above St. Peter's hand is his name in Latin, SANCTUS PETRVS. He can also be identified by the short, square beard and the keys in his left hand. His scroll reads, TV ES CHR[ISTU]S FILIVS DEI VIVI, "Thou art Christ, the Son of the living God," his reply to Jesus' question, "Who do you say that I am" (Matthew 16:15-16).
