Unidentified Saint: A crack runs the length of the statue's right side. The right shoulder and upper arm is lying by its side. The statue is heavily chipped. Characteristics: No right arm or left hand. The figure has a moustache and goatee. Site: Church of San Miguel Achiutla. Location: Right end of same altar as the Virgin in White, along the north wall of the nave (see note). Media and construction: Polychrome, stiffened cloth. Eyes: painted. Hair: carved. Size: About 3 feet (90 cm.) Next: The second altar along the north wall of the nave has three statues of Christ. We begin with a glass case on the altar with Christ carrying the Cross. Introduction to San Miguel Achiutla Note: On
this
site,
references to the cardinal directions always assume
that the main
altar is at the east end of the church, the narthex or
entry area at
the west end, and the two walls
of the nave on the
north and south.
(The nave is the long central section.)
