The Birth of St. John the Baptist

Romanian Orthodox Church of the Holy Apostle Paul and St. Lucy, Syracuse, Sicily

In the lower right corner Zechariah starts to write his message, "John will be his name." Pictured in the opposite corner is the Virgin Mary, whom tradition believed to have assisted at the birth. She continues to spin the gold thread for the Temple veil (Protevangelium of James ¶10). The servants setting the table are traditional in Orthodox images of this event.
