Workshop of Cesare Nebbia, Two Images from the Life of St. Cecilia

1587-87
Sistine Chapel, Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome.

On the left in the first image an angel addresses Cecilia. This is not in the usual tellings of the story. The next scene to the right has Cecilia standing by Valerian while the angel addresses him. In the right half of the image, the angel departs.

The second image shows Almachius on the right ordering the immersion of Cecilia into the scalding bath on the left. Much of the image is given over to subsidiary scenes of martyrdom.
