Niccolo di Liberatore ("L'Alunno")
Altarpiece of the Coronation of the Virgin: Detail, St. John the Baptist

The saint is dressed in his customary animal skin with a fabric mantle. The banner on the long cross in his left hand reveals a few letters from the phrase Ecce Agnus Dei, "Behold the lamb of God" (John 1:29,36). His right hand points to the adjoining panel, in which Christ, the "Lamb of God," is crowning Mary.
