Genesis: The Sabbath Day; Adam Placed in Eden

12th-13th century
Mosaic
Cathedral of the Assumption, Monreale, Sicily

The panel on the left shows God resting on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2). The next one pictures Genesis 2:8, "And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed." On the right Adam stands alone in the Garden. The next panel is the creation of Eve, so most likely this one is intended to illustrate 2:18, "And the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper meet for him.’"
