The Creation: The Tree of Knowledge, Eve

12th century
Mosaic
Palatine Chapel, Palermo, Sicily

On the left the inscription quotes God's words to Adam, de ligno sciencie boni et mali ne comedas, "Of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat" (Genesis 2:17). The inscription on the right is inmisit dominus soporem in adam et tulit evam de costis eius, "The Lord cast a sleep upon Adam and drew Eve from his ribs." This is a summary paraphrase of Genesis 2:21-22.
