The Serpent Tempts Eve

12th-13th century
Cathedral of the Assumption, Monreale, Sicily

Genesis 3:1-6. The inscription quotes from the serpent's words in 3:4b-5a, Nequaquam morte moriemini. Scit enim Deus quod in quocumque die comederitis ex eo, aperientur oculi vestri et eritis sicut dii, "Ye shall not surely die; for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods."
