God Confronts Adam and Eve

12th-13th century
Mosaic
Cathedral of the Assumption, Monreale, Sicily

The inscription combines quotations from Genesis 3:9 and 3:11a: vocavit dominus deus adam et dixit ei ubi es et quis indicavit tibi quod nudus esses, "And the Lord God called unto Adam and said unto him, ‘Where art thou? and who told thee that thou wast naked?’" The image covers his entire colloquy with Adam and Eve (now wearing fig leaves) and the serpent.
