Our Lady of the Rosary

Church of Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio ("The Martorana"), Palermo, Sicily

The subjects of the fifteen "decades" of the rosary are represented in the border insets. In the center, the Christ Child hands the rosary to St. Dominic. Behind Dominic is St. Vincent Ferrer, identified by the book open to a motto associated with him from Revelation 14:7, TIMETE DEUM ET DATE ILLUM HONOREM ("Fear God and give him honor.")

On the right, across from these two, are St. Peter Martyr (identified by the sword in his head) and St. Rose of Lima with her attributes, a rose in her hand and a crown of thorns on her head.

Below, two saints in the garb of cardinals kneel before Mary and Jesus and offer them a basket of white roses. Because the standing saints are all Dominicans, one would imagine these to be Dominicans also, but I know of no Dominican saints who were cardinals.
