Giacomo Coppi, The Liberation of St. Peter

Church of St. Peter in Chains, Rome, Italy

The subject is the narrative in Acts 12:6-11. The soldiers dozing in the right foreground are "the keepers before the door [who] kept the prison." Through the window we see St. Peter on the right, chained and asleep. On the left, one of the two soldiers guarding him is also asleep. In the background, an angel sent to free the saint points toward the door. On the left we see Peter and the angel exiting through that door.

As usual, Peter has a short, square beard.
