Crucifix

20th century
Wood, polychrome
Church of St. John the Baptist, Furelos (Galicia), Spain

The pastor of the church in 2005, Don Xavier, was an acquaintance of the artist during the latter's lifetime. He explained that the Bernardine sun behind the cross and the downward reach of the figure were meant to make visual the theology of the crucifixion and to emphasize Christ's concern for pilgrims. (Furelos is on the Ruta Francés, the major pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.)
