Crucifix with Prophets

16th century
Refectory Museum, Cathedral of St. Mary
Pamplona, Spain

Originally from the village of Larraya, near Pamplona. In the circle at the base of the crucifix are the souls in Purgatory, who according to Aquinas were visited when Christ "descended into Hell." See the "Purgatory and the Cross" segment of my page on the Descent into Hell.
