La Madre de los Dolores

The Hermitage, Melide, Spain

Images like this statue have the title "Mother of Sorrows" or "Our Lady of Sorrows." They are characterized by one or more swords piercing the breast, referring to Simeon's words in Luke 22-38: "thy own soul a sword shall pierce."

Blue is the customary color for the mantle on portraits of Mary.

In the glass coffin below the Sorrowing Mother is a life-size statue of Christ.
