Madonna and Child

Church of Santa María de la Corticela
Santiago de Compostela, Spain

This type of Madonna and Child image derives from the Pelagonitissa or "Virgin with Playing Child" tradition in Orthodox icons, in which the child throws back his head and grabs for his mother's face, neck, or veil.
