Jesus and the Woman at the Well

As in John 4:3-29, Jesus is seated beside the Well of Jacob when a Samaritan woman comes to draw water. His role and authority as teacher are emphasized by his liturgical garments, by the throne-like object on which he sits, and by his position in a register separate from the woman's.

The "water" in the well is a deep red, perhaps in allusion to the blood of the Eucharist. As in some medieval works the leaves on the trees are pictured as tufts in shades of green.
