Pope Liberius and the August Snow
Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome
According to the legend, a miraculous snowfall on August 5 led Pope Liberius to choose the site as the location for a new church, which was known at first as the "Liberian" basilica and then later by its present title, Santa Maria Maggiore.
