The Procession of Virgins at Sant'Apollinare Nuovo: The City of Classe

Church of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, Ravenna

Above the gate on the right is the inscription CIVI[TAS] CLASSIS – "The City of Classe," corresponding to the CIVITAS RAVENN[AS] on the right wall opposite. The boats signify that Classe was the port of Ravenna at the time when the mosaic was created.2 The Procession of Virgins begins with this panel and goes the whole length of the left wall of the nave.
