Fra Angelico, The Crucifixion: Detail, Isaiah

1441-43
Fresco
Convent of San Marco, Florence

This detail is one of the insets in the border around the main image of the Crucifixion, all of which have banderoles with phrases relating to the Crucifixion. Isaiah's banderole reads vere langores nostros ipse tulit et dolores nostros, "Surely he hath borne our infirmities and carried our sorrows" (Isaiah 53:4). This is from Isaiah's prophecy of the "suffering servant" whom Christian commentators identified with Christ.
