Bernard of Clairvaux Curing a Demoniac

Circa 1500
From an altarpiece in the Cistercian Abbey in Zwettl, Austria

In an episode in the Golden Legend, a man brings St. Bernard his wife, who has been possessed by a devil. The devil immediately challenges Bernard from the mouth of a possessed woman. In the painting we see the woman involuntarily speaking the devil's taunt: "This eater of leeks and devourer of cabbages won't get me out of my little old woman!" (Ryan, II, 104) Of course, Bernard then does just that.

Note the small white dog, one of the saint's attributes, standing on the path between the saint and the woman. Unusually, the saint's habit here is black rather than Cistercian white.
