Giovanni di Paolo
St. Matthew and St. Francis of Assisi

Metropolitan Museum of Art, 88.3.11, Gift of Coudert Brothers

The saints' names are written in their haloes. Matthew has no attributes, but Francis is identified by the stigmata in his side and left hand, as also by his Franciscan habit with thrice-knotted cord belt.
