Cenni di Francesco di Ser Cenni, The Coronation of the Virgin with Saints: Detail, The Dormition

1390s
Tempera and gold leaf on panel
The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles

This central panel in the predella sits directly below the main image of the Coronation. Like many late-medieval Dormitions, this one pictures the Apostles celebrating the Office of the Dead. An apostle sprinkles the body with a aspergillum, angels hold candles, and in the area now fallen away Peter would most likely have been reading from a book of the Office. In his arms Christ holds Mary's soul, traditionally pictured as a baby. This particular baby has the same healthy complexion as the others, whereas Mary's skin has gone to gray.

Seven men and three women are pictured in the surviving segment, so presumably the lost portion had the other five men (or four, if St. Thomas was believed absent).
