Gentile da Fabriano
The Nativity

Circa 1420-23
Tempera and gold leaf on panel
The Cloisters, New York City

This painting combines the "Madonna of Humility" iconographic type, in which Mary sits on the ground and adores the Christ child, with Nativity iconography: St. Joseph on the left with his staff, and above him the shepherds on the mountain hearing the angel's announcement.
