The Crucifixion: Detail, St. Bridget of Sweden

Mid-1450s
Tempera on wood, gold ground
Metropolitan Museum of Art
(gift of Lore Heinemann in memory of Rudolf J. Heinemann), 1997.117.9

As usual the saint wears a black habit and white veil. Her left hand holds a red cross with a Eucharistic host in the center, while her right holds a flaming candle to her bare arm. This was a weekly penitential practice of hers.

The flaming tip of the candle has faded with time and is nearly unidentifiable today. Below is a digitally enhanced detail.
