The Trinity

Circa 1400
Tempera on wood
Musei Capitolini, Rome

This "Throne of Mercy" Trinity has an unusually circumstantial crucifix, with details such as the wounded side and the broken stone of Calvary. Also note the triangle motif in the part containing the Father's head: a triangle sits at the top of his halo, another in green lies behind his head, and the actual shape of the image is triangular at the top.

Also remarkable is the contrast between the Father's divine composure and the pain visible on the face of Christ.
