Guariento di Arpo
Coronation of the Virgin Altarpiece: Detail: St. Martin of Tours

Padua, 1344
Tempera and gold leaf on panel
Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, California

St. Martin uses his sword to slice off a piece of his cloak for the poor man in rags before him. As is often the case in St. Martin images in this period, the man is pictured smaller than Martin. The saint's youth at this stage of his life is suggested by the blond hair and merely incipient beard.
