St. Francis of Assisi (?)

Late 18th / early 19th century
Mission San Juan Capistrano, San Juah Capistrano, California

The identification for this statue must be tentative. The saint portrayed wears the Franciscan habit and tonsure, but the right hand shows no sign of the stigmata St. Francis received, and there is no tear in the right side of his garment. However, most portraits of Francis do have him holding or gazing at the crucifix.

The mission was founded in 1776, and the chapel where this statue is displayed was built in 1782. The statue was most likely installed (if not constructed) some time later.
