Fra Angelico, The Crucifixion: Detail, Ezekiel

1441-43
Fresco
Convent of San Marco, Florence

This detail is from the border around the main image of the Crucifixion. The banderole reads exaltavi lignum humile. This phrase is from Ezekiel 17:24ab, "And all the trees of the country shall know that I the Lord have brought down the high tree, and exalted the low tree: and have dried up the green tree, and have caused the dry tree to flourish." Some commentators took this tree to refer to Christ's cross or to Christ himself. (See the Glossa Ordinaria, IV, 1209-1210).
