Unidentified Saint:
The statue stands on a sculptured base; a snake forms part of the design of the base. The face seems to have been repainted. The neck is original, the veins still glowing beneath the skin. The hands are disproportionately small and seem of different manufacture. There is an odd lumpiness at the hips which may suggest sculpted clothing beneath the fabric robe.

Characteristics: Green robe with gold cape, eyes cast upward and slightly to the left.

Site: Church of San Pedro y San Pablo Etla.

Location: Third bay in the south wall of the nave (see note).

Media and construction: Wood, gesso, paint, fabric garments. Eyes: glass. Hair: sculpted.

Next: Walking across the nave to the second bay in the south wall, we find a statue of Christ at the pillar.

Note: On this site, references to the cardinal directions always assume that the main altar is at the east end of the church, the narthex or entry area at the west end, and the two walls of the nave on the north and south. (The nave is the long central section.) Actual orientations may differ.
