of the Virgin Mary |
Unidentified Priest |
Unidentified Priest: The lily in the left hand and the cross in the right appear to be recent additions. The figure has lifelike skin tones with five o'clock shadow and holds the cross out toward the viewer. Considering the small size, the hands are remarkably well detailed, with sinews and fingernails.
Basis for Identification: Black cassock and white surplice. Site: Church of the Assumption, Tlaxiaco. Location: In a glass case on the first altar along the north wall of the nave, directly below the Guadalupe (see note). Media and construction: Wood, gesso, paint. Eyes: glass, with lashes. Size: About 2 feet (60 cm.) Previous santo Introduction to Tlaxiaco Note: On this site, references to the cardinal directions always assume that the main altar is at the east end of the church, the narthex or entry area at the west end, and the two walls of the nave on the north and south. (The nave is the long central section.) Actual orientations may differ. The photo shown here is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license.
