Helper of Pinturicchio, The Annunciation

1489-91
Fresco
Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, Rome

This is the third in a series of frescos in the half-dome of the Basso della Rovere Chapel. Gabriel stands at the entrance with his hands folded in a gesture of humility. Mary sits at a disproportionately large prie-dieu, watched over by one angel behind her and three in the background. It is rare for Annunciation images to include figures other than Mary and Gabriel.
