Helper of Pinturicchio, The Birth of the Virgin
1489-91
Fresco
Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, Rome
This is the first in a series of frescos in the half-dome of the Basso della Rovere Chapel. It applies the usual iconography: The birth is pictured in a middle-class home of the period; St. Anne is in a bed in the background; the baby is in the foreground with midwives; and a very old St. Joachim ponders the event on the far right.
